“Serene, neutral and inviting,” is how designer Stefani Stein describes the interiors of this fresh, upbeat apartment in West Hollywood, “within walking distance of popular restaurants and clubs such as Craig’s and The San Vicente Bungalows.”
The 800 sq/ft home is perfectly formed thanks to the trained eye of Stein, who has managed to add characterful touches into the ‘very crisp’ new-build while maximising the potential of the narrow floor plan.
The initial brief was to create a calm, inviting space with muted accents, and Stein has taken an earthy-yet-minimal approach to styling throughout. “The client really wanted a leather sofa,” she recalls, “and they also loved the idea of wallpaper, which is always a personal favourite of mine.”
Accordingly, the bedroom wallpaper, a neutral-yet-fun pattern from August Abode, is the design feature she’s most pleased with in the apartment: “I love that it is simultaneously impactful, yet subtle. It makes a statement without overpowering the other elements in the space and provides the perfect backdrop for neutral layers and textural elements.”
The open-plan living and dining area is long and narrow, presenting a design challenge for Stein and her team, who had a tight delivery schedule for the project, which meant that designing custom pieces wasn’t an option. Arranging furnishings so that there was a distinct dining area and unobstructed path to the patio, while still allowing for a conversational seating arrangement and ‘a comfy spot to curl up and watch television’ meant precisely thinking through the scale and purpose of each item. A dining nook next to the compact oak kitchen features a small marble tulip table and a pair of Jeanneret-style chairs.
